Tear it down or fix it up?
If your garage is a cluttered storage area and falling apart, this question has crossed your mind. When was the last time you actually parked your vehicle inside your garage?
A client came to us recently with a run-down garage in a back alley. The concrete floor was cracked. The side door and the wood siding were rotting.
The swing-up garage door wasn’t wide enough to accommodate the family SUV and it was dangerously mounted on cables, which created a safety hazard.
Instead of being a functional garage, this ramshackle structure was an inefficient storage space where things were dumped.
Our Garage Living design consultant, Jonathan Steyn, has seen hundreds of garages just like this. Despite all of the issues, he knew that “this garage had so much potential”.
Within two weeks, Garage Living transformed a shabby garage into a beautiful, functional garage.
Starting with the exterior, we determined that the outside walls could be repaired and painted or stripped and re-cladded. Our client chose to have the exterior repaired and painted.
Garage Living replaced all of the rotting wood at the base of the garage. The entire exterior was scraped, sanded, primed, and painted, restoring the outside of the garage to its former look.
New garage door and opener
The garage door opening was widened from 8 feet to 9 feet so that the family’s SUV could easily enter the garage.
The door was upgraded to a Wayne Dalton carriage house garage door with a Lexington finish. This is an insulated, steel garage door that requires very little maintenance and offers long-lasting durability.
A wall mount, LiftMaster garage door opener was installed to replace a manual swing-up door that was on its last legs. Attractive coach lights on either side of the garage door look sharp and provide security lighting.
Flooring, cabinetry, and wall organizers
The cracked concrete floor was repaired and protected with a Floortex™ Coating system. This upgrade alone transforms the garage into clean and refined looking space. The flooring color used in the photo below is called Blue Nightfall.
The cabinetry used in this makeover is the GL Signature model. Its modular design works well in this space and features welded steel construction with magnetic door latches and lockable drawers for tools.
Slatwall organizers were added to provide attractive and efficient storage space to the garage. Utilizing the walls for storage provided the floor space necessary to accommodate a vehicle.
A two week transformation
This garage went from a run-down storage space to a revitalized, functional garage in just two weeks. The repairs and painting were completed in five days. Installation of the floor, cabinetry organizers, garage door, and opener took another four days.
When it comes to a renovation project like this, Garage Living takes care of everything so you don’t have to – junk removal, concrete repair, electrical, whatever is required. Many companies will only install the flooring or just the garage door. We provide a complete solution which makes the renovation experience, simple, and easy.
