Concours d’Elegance (or competition of elegance) dates back to the 17th century in France. This prestigious event celebrates antique and classic cars not for speed, but for showmanship. Many had the opportunity to see this spectacular event for the first time when the Cobble Beach Golf Resort hosted the event on Sept. 14 just north of Owen Sound, Ontario, with a breathtaking backdrop of Georgian Bay.
Located on the 18th fairway of the golf course, Concours d’Elegance featured more than 120 cars spanning 16 categories. The models ranged from horseless carriages from the early 1900s to modern cars such as Ferraris. There were cars for every taste, including luxury cars, sports cars, muscle cars, Canadian cars, American cars and European cars. Many of these were rare and valued in the millions.
As the name suggests, Concours d’Elegance is a competition, but unlike other car competitions, speed is not the deciding factor. Instead, cars are judged based on excellence. This includes style, historical accuracy and technical merit. The car that won Best in Show was a 1928 Isotta-Fraschini 8A SS, an Italian luxury car.
The ambience was nothing short of spectacular. The location offered one-of-a-kind views and there was symphony music played throughout the day. To top it off, it was a beautiful late summer’s day. The sun made an appearance, making the event even more enjoyable for all the car owners and attendees.
The Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance actually kicked off the day before, on Sept. 13, with a Participants’ Tour that lasted four hours. Following that was a Tour lunch and a dinner for the judges and participants that night. After the Concours d’Elegance the next day, participants and judges enjoyed a gala dinner.
Proceeds raised by the event went towards a rooftop helipad for Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital. Garage Living, Toronto’s top custom garage company, was a proud sponsor of this inaugural event.
